Electrotherapy

Additional tools in the doctors’ therapeutic toolbox include electrotherapy modalities such as Ultrasound and TENS. Ultrasound is a modality used when Dr. Riggs or Dr. Spencer desire to heat tissues that are particularly deep, including the tissues in the low back. Ultrasound works by producing ultrasonic waves of vibration which can help to break up adhesions in soft tissue, dissipate deposits of toxins in muscles, and promote blood flow to aid in healing. TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a form of electrotherapy which is particularly useful at reducing perceived sensations of pain for purely symptomatic relief. This is especially beneficial for patients experiencing pain at night that interferes with sleep or as a safe alternative to NSAIDs or opioids for the management of acute flare-ups of pain.
