Female Hormone Fluctuations: What is Normal?

As functional medicine practitioners, we look at hormones from multiple angles to get an accurate picture of what is happening inside your body. We must consider: How efficient is the body at producing the hormone? Are hormone binding carrier proteins affecting hormone function? Are the cells sensitive to hormone communication signals? Is the body detoxifying (metabolizing and eliminating) the hormones after they’ve done their job?

With female sex hormones, we also must keep at the forefront what the normal hormone fluctuations are throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle. At different times in a woman’s menstrual cycle, we should see different levels of the primary sex hormones. Check out the video in our 3/17/22 newsletter to see how Dr. Spencer explains what a normal 28 day sex hormone cycle looks.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, make sure you are tracking your menstrual cycle along with the onset and resolution of symptoms. This will better support the process of uncovering what might be the root cause of your symptoms.

Symptoms include:

  • Headaches/Migraines

  • Anxiety/Depression

  • Irritability

  • Appetite Changes

  • Breast Tenderness

  • Bloating

  • Cramping

  • Mood Swings
